November 15, 2001

Al Zapanta, President of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, and Imperial County Board of Supervisors Chairman, Tony P. Tirado, will host a one-day "Wiring The Border" workshop on November 26 in Calexico, California, at 8:00 a.m. at the Elks Lodge on 310 Rockwood Road.

The Chamber’s program was created to help 200 small and medium-sized businesses become connected to "e-commerce" opportunities, and help them establish eligibility to compete for contracts with major corporations and with the local, state and federal governments.

Participants will have the opportunity to hold working sessions with representatives from such major corporations as Mattel, Boeing, Southern California Edison, SEMPRA, Delphi Automotive, and others.

The Honorable Joe Harper, Chairman of the Border Trade Alliance (TBA) and Mayor of San Luis, Arizona, will be the luncheon keynote speaker.

As nearly all the procurement systems of major corporations and the government are e-commerce based, the Chamber will help these 200 small and medium sized businesses by donating hardware, software, internet connectivity, and e-commerce training.

The November 26th "Wiring The Border" seminar will help small and medium sized businesses become accredited into the supply chains, and introduced to the respective buying communities, of these major enterprises.

U.S.-Mexico Chamber President Al Zapanta created the "Wiring The Border" program in response to a call from the White House, and declared: "Trade between the United States and Mexico has been growing at such an extraordinary rate that we created this program to ensure that companies of every size have an opportunity to participate in the success of NAFTA."

Zapanta has brought together a powerful team of partners for the Workshop, including IBM, Roadway, Telmex, Prodigy, Southwestern Bell, PurchaseSoft, Print Café, Global Biz Services, Hotlocker, LoBusco.com, and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

Interested parties should contact Ken Hollis at 760-337-7814 for more details about the day-long workshop.
